Here at the Counselling Service COMPASS Programs we believe that
students are resourceful people who are very capable of making
changes when they know how to do so. Therefore, we have put together
some self-help information for you on various interesting topics
we are often asked about (see below). This information is meant
to provide you with a good starting point rather than being comprehensive.

Our resources cover a range of topics that can be organised around
three themes: Academic enhancement, Life management skills, and
Personal Development. These are the overall types of problems
that students face on a daily basis.
Academic enhancement:
These relate to skills for studying, and can include general study
tips, how to utilise your memory to your advantage, how to think
critically, writing assessments, and much more.
Life management: These include
tips to help you achieve overall balance in life and can include
time management, procrastination, problem solving, and goal setting.
Personal development: Sometimes
personal issues can have a significant impact on our studies and
affect out ability to achieve our personal best. Such issues may
include anxiety, depression, relationship and communication difficulties,
stress management, family difficulties, and drug and alcohol issues.
To make it easier for you to get resources, we have grouped them
by topics/skills. Within each topic we have a range of resources,
including information sheets, links to online self-paced learning
modules, and self-help books that you may find helpful. Some of
the self-help books are available in our lending library in our
waiting area; you are free to browse through or borrow these for
up to two weeks. Some of these are also in the UNSW library and
we have a list of call numbers for these. If you know about other
good self help books which you think students would find useful
don't forget to tell us.
We also have monthly newsletters which you can find here.
We also have newsletters relating to Acceptance & Committment Therapy, which you can find here.
